Background of Department

The Department of Botany, established in the year 2005, completed its 15 years in 2020 and since then the department has been providing education in the field of Botany for the students of Ladakh. Most of the passed out students are pursuing masters and research in various reputed universities of India. Also many of the passed out students are placed at various levels of jobs in both govt. and non- Govt. organizations. The faculties of the department are putting in a lot of effort to offer high quality teaching with regard to subject matter of regional, national and international importance.

Since its inception the department has seen increase in the enrolment of students, up gradation of laboratory and establishment of a botanical garden which is in its developing phase.

Facilities in the Department:

Laboratory: 1 medium sized laboratory which is equipped with instruments like Autoclave, Incubator, Oven, Microtome, soil and water Analysis kit etc, it can accommodate around 30 students at a time. Attached to the laboratory are 1 store room and 1 staff room.

Botanical Garden: botanical garden was established in 2018 under the leadership of Principal Professor Deskyong Namgyal. Botanical Garden harbours a green house, Arboretum section, Herbal section, ornamental section, small pond and a bore well. The purpose of having a Botanical Garden is to grow variety of crops at a given time, The dapatment in collaboration with LEHO an NGO grown various member of cucurbitaceae like cucumber , zucchini, water melon and bottle gourd. Also other vegatbles like spinach, tomato, brinjal etc were grown. The main aim behind growing these vegetables is to train, motivate and encourage students to go for organic farming in their respective villages. A small Arboratum is in the garden which harbours variety of trees of Ladakh region.
The trees include few species of Salix, Rosa, Robinia Psuedoacacia, Malus, Pinus, Prunus, Myricaria etc. This collection helps students as well as teachers tolearn a lot about the flora of Ladkh region.

A small Herbal section is also present in the botanical garden in which few medicinal plants of Ladakh region like Rheum speciformis, Allium sp, Inula and Dracocephalum etc are growing.

Various Activities carried out by Botany Department

Students of B.Sc interacting with the expert of molecular Biology Laboratory at DIHAR, Leh Ladakh. Students who opted Mushroom cultivation as skill development course, visited Mushroom cultivation unit at SKUAST Stakna, Leh Ladakh. Biological Tour to wetlands of Puga and Tsokar, in Changthang to understands the flora and fauna
